North East India has been the meeting point of many communities, faiths, and cultures, home to more than 166 separate tribes speaking a wide range of languages. Some groups have migrated over the centuries from places as far as South East Asia and Mongolia. They retain their cultural traditions and values but are beginning to adapt to contemporary lifestyles. With the diverse and rich culture, there is also the Traditional Healers who have been the main healthcare providers. The NE is largely connected only by roads, in many places only footpaths and trekking trails. The TCHPs however are found almost everywhere, even in the remotest of areas where no conventional healthcare facilities exist.

The NECU PrCB is committed to having such service providers duly recognized. Even if at times it has taken the NECU PrCB teams two days of travelling and a few hours of trekking to reach a TCHP candidate for Certification, the NECU PrCB teams have ventured on. In this way, NECU PrCB has been able to evaluate and certify TCHPs from Tripura (twice), Assam (Jorhat, Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao, Udalguri, Baksa & Dhemaji), Nagaland (Dimapur & Tuensang), and Meghalaya.
